Caren Ulrich Stacy has 15+ years of experience in lawyer recruiting, professional development, and diversity with law firms across the country, including Arnold & Porter, Cooley Godward, McGuireWoods, Weil Gotshal & Manges, and Jenkens & Gilchrist. She is an expert in the field of lawyer development and was awarded the NALP Mark of Distinction for Professional Development and Training in 2009 because of her vision, leadership and innovation. Caren was also recently appointed as adjunct faculty for Denver University Sturm College of Law’s Master of Science in Legal Administration Program. Starting this spring, she will teach a course entitled “Lawyer Recruiting, Development and Advancement in Law Firms.”
As the founder of Lawyer Development Strategies LLC, she specializes in helping law firms and legal departments recruit, integrate, develop, advance, and retain the lawyers who are best suited to service the needs of their clients. Her talents include building and integrating core competency models, training curricula, evaluations, upward reviews, merit-based compensation, mentoring programs, work assignment systems and experiential learning frameworks through the use of pro bono projects and shadowing initiatives. She also consults with law firms on creating policies and initiatives that support a diverse and inclusive work environment. Her contributions in these areas have helped several law firms enhance their reputations as “best places to work” by entities such as The American Lawyer, Vault, Working Mothers, Fortune, and the Minority Corporate Counsel Association.
Caren is a frequent speaker and author for organizations such as The American Lawyer, American Bar Association, and NALP. In addition to over 80 speaking engagements and articles, she co-authored a book in 2005 entitled “Loyalty by Design: A Practical Guide for Developing an Effective Attorney Integration Program.” She has held many leadership positions within the legal industry, including serving as chair and vice-chair of the NALP Attorney Development Committee, two terms on the board of directors for the Professional Development Consortium and as co-chair of The American Lawyer Chief Recruitment, Professional Development and Diversity Officers Conference.
Caren is the co-founder and facilitator of the DC and NY Minority Attorney Networking Series which is sponsored by over 45 law firms. The series was established in 2005 to provide minority attorneys in Washington, D.C. and New York with the opportunity to connect and interact with colleagues for career and business development purposes. Over the past several years, 3000+ minority lawyers have participated in the events. Due to the series’ success, law firms in Dallas, Boston and Philadelphia have requested Caren’s assistance to create similar initiatives.
